Description of the Violation
We are required to monitor your drinking water for specific contaminants on a regular basis. Results of regular monitoring are an indicator of whether your drinking water meets health standards. During the first quarter of 2024, we did not monitor or test for Total Trihalomethanes and Halo Acetic Acids and therefore cannot be sure of the quality of your drinking water during that time. We are required to sample in a specific week of each quarter, and we sampled too early during that quarter. We were notified of this violation on May 1, 2024, and instructed to issue public notice to our customers within a year. However, we failed to issue the Notice within the required timeframe and received a public notice violation. The required samples were collected during the first quarter of 2024 but were not collected during the required sample window.
When the Violation Occurred
The required samples were not collected during the first quarter of 2024 during the sample window but were collected during the quarter. The public notice was not sent to customers within the required period.
Potential Adverse Health Effects
TTHM: Some people who drink water containing trihalomethanes over the MCL over many years may experience problems with their liver, kidneys, or central nervous system, and may have an increased risk of cancer.
HAA5: Some people who drink water containing Haloacetic Acids over the MCL over many years may also have an increased risk of cancer.
Population at Risk
Infants, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems may be more susceptible to the effects of these contaminants.
Use of Alternative Water Supplies
Currently, alternative water supplies are not necessary. This notice is precautionary due to a missed monitoring requirement, not a confirmed exceedance of contaminant levels.
Recommended Consumer Actions
No immediate action is required
If you have specific health concerns, especially if you are in a vulnerable group, you may wish to consult your healthcare provider.
Corrective Actions
We are taking steps to ensure that all future monitoring requirements are met, including:
- Reviewing and updating our sampling schedule.
- Providing additional training for staff.
- Coordinating with our laboratory to ensure timely sample collection and analysis.
Expected Resolution
ACWA has already conducted the required sampling in the required time frame.
